"Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature."Mark 16:15 NKJV

I am a debtor, I AM ready, AND I AM not ashamed Introduction: Romans 1:14-16 Paul writes, “I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to wise and to unwise. So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.” Thesis: As Gods creation all of mankind are debtors, for the life given by God. We are all debtors for the innocent blood of Jesus Christ, given for our salvation ( that undeserved blessing of God’s Grace). As God’s children (Christians) we must always be ready for Jesus’ return because only God Himself knows of that day and hour when Jesus will come for His children. We also need to be ready to give a defense for the hope that is in us expressed with meekness and fear, unashamed of the gospel which has the power to save your souls.Today I’m going to do a lot of scripture reading, and I’ll tell you why. At bible camp I asked the children if they have ever heard the term, “Pick his brain!” One of the best ways to learn is to ask questions of someone very knowledgeable of the subject. I have picked the minister’s brain, the elders brains through bible study, and various others brains in Merced’s congregation. But the answers I seek only come from the most knowledgeable brain of all, God, and I do this by reading Gods word! That is why I am going to read a lot from the scriptures So, Please turn your bibles to Ephesians 1: 3-14 to see how Paul tells us why we are debtors to God. I. I am a debtor. A. Ephesians 1:3-14. 3) “Blessed be the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4) just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5) having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6) to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved. 7) In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8) which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9) having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10) that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth--in Him. 11) In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12) that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. 13) In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14) who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.”Notice that there spiritual blessings for those that are in Christ. If we are outside of Christ, then we need to find a way to be in Christ to obtain these blessings from God. The scriptures tell us the only way to receive these spiritual blessings is to be in Christ, that is where we receive His blessings ( God’s grace ).Notice that those who have become Christians are predestined to adoption as sons ( and of course daughters) and obtained an inheritance. God is telling us () those that are obedient to Jesus His Son () are His sons also; and we will have a place with Him in heaven, our inheritance. That is our hope.Notice that Christians have redemption through His blood. The Grace of God is Jesus Himself. In Him, through His blood, we receive forgiveness, peace, joy and so many other blessings. These few reasons alone should be enough for anyone to start considering the salvation of their eternal soul, and I thank God in heaven for all of you here() that heard the word of truth and trusted Him enough to believe the gospel. The best day in my life was November 10th 1998, the day I was baptized, placing me in Christ and having so many grievous sins washed away. I was so filled with joy () that I could hardly contain myself. A few months later I wrote a poem to express this joy because I realized just how much of a debtor I was, and still am, to Him who took the cross in my stead.I’m sure that everyone knows what debt is () but have we ever experienced an instance where that debt is forgiven? If I received a notice in the mail from, lets say, MasterCard, and it said, BALANCE PAID IN FULL. Someone would have to perform C.P.R. on me, and it would probably have to be my wife Linda. I think I’d better be a little nicer to her () or I’m a goner! If this (forgiven credit debt) should ever happen () I think I would be very grateful () but as we all know this is just a () what if, the reality is () I’m going to pay two to three times the amount of the loan or more () unless I pay well over the minimum amount due. Our debts to God are our sins. Isn’t it nice to know that our balance sheet can read, PAID IN FULL if we come to Him through His Son? We are forgiven and our sins washed away by the blood of His Son through baptism. After we are in Christ we will continue to receive His blessings as we express our love to each other. Jesus teaches a lesson of a debt or (debt of sins) being forgiven because of the amount of love a person shows toward others. Turn your bibles to Luke 7: 41-48 where Jesus is speaking to Simon Peter.B. Luke 7:41-48. 41) “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii’s, and the other fifty. 42) And when they had nothing with which repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?” 43) Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” 44) Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for my feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. 45) You gave me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46) You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47) Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.” 48) And He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”It seems clear that the more we do in loving-kindness, the more we are forgiven in kind by God. When we show our love to others, we are showing our love for God. It is Also true, that the less we show our love () the less we are forgiven, () the fewer our spiritual blessings will be and the harder our struggles will be. It is clear to me, through His word, that we show our love for God by fulfilling His commandments. Love God… Love your neighbor… Forgive those that trespass against you… and so many more. As a debtor to Christ the first is easy ( loving God) because He has given us so much, but the next has a degree of difficulty, loving your neighbor. After all, some people are difficult to get along with. The next seems a little more difficult, forgiving people. I think we all struggle with this one from time to time, yet if we fill ourselves with His word () these things become easier and easier. Maybe your kindness won’t always be accepted by some people, but your heart should always be in the right place.Lets continue to examine why we are debtors. God put a lot of work and effort into preparing a way for His children. For thousands of years He taught the Hebrews what sin was through the scriptures of the Old Testament. Through those same scriptures He taught us that we couldn’t possibly be sinless on our own. We need God’s help to be saved! So He sent His Son to fulfill His plan of reconciliation.C. Lets read Ephesians 2:14-18. 14)“For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of division between us, 15) having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances ( the old Testament), so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, 16) and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. 17) And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. 18) For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.”All we have to do is believe, and put ourselves in Christ to break the bonds of sin. Only in Him can our sins be forgiven. Do we remember (or know) what the acronym of GRACE stands for?God’s Redemption At Christ’s Expense. When He was nailed to the cross () He took the old Testament away and became the propitiation ( property owner) for our sins so that all of God’s creation could live. A debt no one can repay.By the grace of God all can become one through the cross that Jesus bore for us by learning and following His commandments in the New Testament. Through baptism ( full emersion ) we are cleansed of our sins by the blood of our savior Jesus Christ. This is how we are placed IN CHRIST. Please folks, don’t let these words go in one ear and out the other, consider your debt and do something about it.II. I am ready. I just talked about HOW and WHY we are debtors. Now it’s time to discuss () being ready. How do we become ready? Why do we need to become ready? What do we need to be ready for? We are to be ready to preach the word () and we need to be ready for that day when our savior comes for us. Jesus tells us in Matthew 24: 36-44 about being ready. A. Mathew 24:36-44. 36) “But of that day and hour no one knows, no, not even the angles of heaven, But My Father only. 37) But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 38) For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, 39) and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 40) Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. 41) Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left. 42) Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your lord is coming. 43) But know this, that if the master of the house has known what hour the thief would come, he would not have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 44) Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an Hour when you do not expect Him.”How do we make ourselves ready when we don’t know when He will come for us? We study that’s how! Only then will we be ready. He knows that we are a lazy people. He didn’t tell us when he will come because He knows we won’t take the time to study and learn His way until the very last minute. I personally think that Generations would perish, and that would be an unacceptable loss. Aren’t most people just like that master of the house who doesn’t need to watch for a robber until that hour he is expected? There won’t be any effort made on our part if we know when He will come. Doesn’t He deserve our time and effort? I think so. When we study, we gain the knowledge to teach the gospel to others. If we keep studying and eventually get to know the scriptures well, we will be able to convince, rebuke and exhort correctly. Otherwise we will fall for anything anyone says, including fables. Lets read 2Timothy 4: 1-5 and take a look at what Paul writes to Timothy about being ready. B. 2Timothy 4:1-5. 1) “I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2) Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3) For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4) and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5) But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” We need to be steadfast in God’s word and make sure that His word () remains His. We need to mold ourselves to it and never try to mold it to our desires. If God’s word is twisted to satisfy our life styles () then it is no longer () His word. If it is no longer His word then we have moved ourselves outside of His saving grace () because grace is only in Him ( His word). It scares me to death to think that most people in this world today believe that His word is out-dated or old fashioned. There is no way on earth people like this can be ready, because they are only seeking to satisfying themselves. Take a hard look at yourselves when you study the scriptures. Are you looking for the truth or for an excuse ? And when you realize the truth, do you say to God, Oh Father, I’ve been wrong! And pray to Him for forgiveness and strength to do His will? Be wise and let His word move you to action so you can be ready when He comes. To further stress the importance of being ready lets read Matthew 25:1-13 Where Jesus tells the parable of the ten virgins. C. Mathew 25:1-13. 1) “Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2) “Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 3) Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, 4) but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5) But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept. 6) And at midnight a cry was heard: Behold, the bridegroom is coming, go out to meet him! 7) Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. 8) And the foolish said to the wise, ‘give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9) But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ 10) And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut. 11) Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ 12) But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13) Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming. In this parable, Jesus, the bridegroom, came for and received those that were ready and waiting for Him and didn’t recognize the ones that weren’t ready. He says purposefully, that the kingdom shall be likened to this parable. How sad it would be () to be on the other side of that door on judgment day. Forever lost because you never found the time to properly study His will. That is, studying it to mold yourself to be the Christian that He wants you to be and not the Christian you feel you should be. There are no second chances, but by accepting His will we can find ourselves on the inside of that door where eternal life and joy is. Again, isn’t it our hope to be home with the Heavenly Father? III. I am not ashamed. I’ve talked about HOW and WHY we are debtors and HOW and WHY we are to be ready. Now lets examine WHY we are not to be ashamed. First, what does it mean to be ashamed? How can we tell if a person is ashamed? And is the gospel something to be ashamed of? The World Book Dictionary defines ashamed as follows: 1) Feeling shame; disturbed or uncomfortable because one has done something wrong, improper, or silly; feeling embarrassed or disgraced. 2) Unwilling because of fear of shame, held back by the belief that shame would be felt. People don’t like to feel shame. Most of the time when we realize that our actions are improper, we become embarrassed and change our habits so shame can be avoided. Sometimes people don’t do the things they should because they fear what others may say, think, or do to them. Also, there are people who have no shame at all, and we know that God is not in them. Through study of the word that God has given us, we can gain the strength and knowledge to withstand those that wish to trash His word. God’s word is truth and tells us what is shameful, so how should we feel about the gospel? Let’s see what the scriptures say about it. Lets read 2Timothy 1: 8-12 as Paul guides Timothy in his ministry. A. Read 2Timothy 1:8-12. 8)“Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, 9) who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, 10) but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11) to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. 12) For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I Know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that day.” And lets conclude these thoughts with 1Peter 3:13-17. B. 1Peter 3:13-17. 13) “And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? 14) But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.” 15) But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 16) having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. 17) For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.” We may suffer from time to time for the sake of righteousness. A lot of times we become sneered at, laughed at, cursed at, made to feel awkward or even called stupid or foolish. Very rarely will a Christian be physically assaulted but regardless of the reactions of others, our faith in Gods word is nothing to be ashamed of. Don’t let the actions of others keep you from expressing the love you have for the Lord. If we stand ashamed before people in this life, how in the world will we ever stand before God on judgment day () and not be ashamed? Be steadfast in your confidence knowing that the Lord loves those that practice righteousness. Take a look at 1John 2:28 through 1John 3:3. C. 1John 2:28-3:3. 28) “And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. 29) If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him. 3:1) Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2) Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3) And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” Conclusion: Like I said earlier, there is no better brain to pick than God’s. It is God’s revelation through the word of truth, that we are debtors for the salvation we have in the blessings of His grace. Because we have read His inspired word () we know we are debtors for the innocent blood of Jesus Christ, given for our salvation. We know we need to do everything we can to make ourselves ready. Ready to give a defense for the hope that is in us. Ready for His coming, and being ready to stand before Him unashamed! To do that we know we are to be unashamed of the gospel which has the power to save souls. How wonderful it is that we have the inspired word of God available to us () to study and learn these things to keep us on the narrow path to Him. David, while expressing his love and trust in the Lord, teaches us this very lesson in Psalm 25:1-5. This psalm pretty much sums it up. Read Psalm 25:1-5. 1) To You, O Lord, I lift up my soul. 2) O my God, I trust in You; let me not be ashamed; let not my enemies triumph over me. 3) Indeed, let no one who waits on You be ashamed; let those be ashamed who deal treacherously without cause. 4) Show me Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths. 5) Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day. My hope is to be with the Heavenly Father some day () and I will if I allow Him to be the gardener () and my soul His garden. As a seed, if we allow ourselves to hear what He has to tell us, we can open our hearts as fertile soil so faith may grow. “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17 As faith grows through Gods word as nutrients necessary for the seeds growth, we can’t help but to believe in Him and realize that we are debtors for His taking our place on the cross and opening the door to everlasting life. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 Gods word can’t nourish our hearts if it is planted in contaminated soil. We need to clean up the contamination ( our sins) or die. We make ourselves ready through repentance, cleaning up the contamination of our lives, turning away from the sinful ways of our old selves and embracing our spiritual life in Gods word.“Truly , these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent.” Acts 17:30 Now that we have God’s word (the nutrients) in our hearts, (the soil) we as seeds, can secure our potential for life by confessing that which is known only by faith. “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Rom. 10:9-10 Any gardener knows that seeds don’t sprout and grow without water, and every Christian knows that baptism it the reflection of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. Our Lord Jesus tells us that in order to be born again, we must be born of water. A new being springing from the water of life. Without water we will also die. “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” Mark 16:16 Now we are growing () in His garden. He is the gardener and will prune away everything that dies on His vine. In order to survive we must continue to grow the way He trains us. “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” 1Cor. 15: 58 We are debtors both inside and outside of Christ and these last few scriptures will plant you, and help keep you, ready to grow unashamed in His garden. Will you come now and let Him train you to be part of His garden. If you were already in His garden and find yourself without His care please take this time to put yourself back in His care as we stand and sing the song of invitation.
